A Brampton regional councillor sits on both Brampton City Council and Peel Regional Council, while a city councillor sits only on City Council unless the new council appoints them to the Region. On October 26, 2026, each Brampton ward pair elects one of each, so every voter picks two councillors plus the mayor.
The two jobs share a ward pair and a seat at City Hall, but they split at the Region, which runs garbage collection, water, paramedics and housing. This guide explains who does what, how the three extra Regional seats get filled after the vote, and why it matters for your ballot. For the voting basics, start with our complete guide to voting in Brampton’s 2026 election.

What is the difference between a regional and a city councillor in Brampton?
A Brampton regional councillor is elected to serve on two councils at once: Brampton City Council and Peel Regional Council. A Brampton city councillor is elected to City Council only. The City of Brampton’s 2026 candidate package lists both offices with one seat each for the same five ward pairs, so both represent the same neighbourhoods.
| Regional councillor | City councillor | |
|---|---|---|
| Seats in 2026 | 5 (one per ward pair) | 5 (one per ward pair) |
| Who elects them | Voters in the ward pair | Voters in the ward pair |
| Sits on Brampton City Council | Yes | Yes |
| Sits on Peel Regional Council | Yes, automatically | Only if City Council appoints them (3 of the 5) |
| Term | Nov. 15, 2026 to Nov. 14, 2030 | Nov. 15, 2026 to Nov. 14, 2030 |
At City Hall, both kinds of councillor vote on City matters such as transit, recreation, parking rules and by-laws. The difference shows up at Peel Region, where decisions on Regional services are made.
What does Brampton City Council decide?
Brampton City Council, made up of the mayor and the 10 councillors, decides on services the City of Brampton runs. These include Brampton Transit, recreation centres and programs, parks, parking and other by-laws, snow clearing on City streets, and the City’s share of your property tax bill.
If you have used our guides to Brampton Transit fares and PRESTO or the City’s snow clearing rules, you have read about decisions that sit with City Council. Problems with those services go to the City through Brampton 311.
The mayor also holds extra powers under Ontario’s strong mayor rules. Our explainer on what Brampton’s next mayor can do covers those in detail.
What does Peel Regional Council decide?
Peel Regional Council makes decisions on Regional by-laws, programs, infrastructure and finance, according to Peel Region. The Region lists its services as including garbage collection and recycling, water and wastewater, paramedic services, housing and shelter, long-term care and seniors’ services, child care support, health programs and road maintenance.
The City of Brampton’s page on Regional representation adds that issues decided at Regional Council include affordable housing, social services, community and road safety, policing, paramedics, garbage disposal, recycling and planning matters.
That is why your garbage and recycling day comes from Peel Region, not the City, for now. Peel Regional Council voted in September 2025 to have the City of Brampton take over garbage, organics and yard waste collection on October 1, 2027, partway through the next council term. Our Brampton garbage collection schedule guide shows how to look yours up.
How many seats does Brampton have on Peel Regional Council?
Brampton has 9 of the 25 seats on Peel Regional Council. Region of Peel By-law 83-2020, passed on December 17, 2020, sets the council at 25 members: the Regional Chair, 12 from Mississauga, 9 from Brampton and 3 from Caledon.

| Municipality | Seats on Peel Regional Council |
|---|---|
| Mississauga | 12 (mayor plus 11) |
| Brampton | 9 (mayor plus 8) |
| Caledon | 3 (mayor plus 2) |
| Regional Chair | 1 |
| Total | 25 |
Before that by-law took effect with the 2022 election, Brampton had 7 seats. The City’s Regional representation page says Brampton has 44% of Peel’s population but held 29% of the seats at the time. The by-law leaves it to Brampton to decide, by its own by-law, how its 8 members other than the mayor are chosen.
The Regional Chair is not on your Brampton ballot. The City’s 2026 candidate package lists only the mayor, councillor and school trustee offices.
How do the 3 extra Brampton seats on Regional Council get filled?
Brampton City Council appoints three of the five newly elected city councillors to Peel Regional Council after each election. The City’s 2026 candidate package says Brampton “is required to appoint three additional members to Regional Council,” selected from among the five City Councillors.
Voters don’t choose which city councillors go to the Region. The new council does, after the votes are counted.
What happened after the 2022 election
The 2022 vote shows how the process works in practice. At a special meeting on November 16, 2022, City Council appointed three city councillors to Regional Council, representing Wards 1 and 5, Wards 2 and 6, and Wards 3 and 4. It also named an alternate from Wards 9 and 10. The appointees were sworn in at Regional Council’s first meeting of the term the next day, according to the City’s news release.
That meant voters in Wards 7 and 8 and Wards 9 and 10 had one councillor from their own ward pair at the Region for the 2022 to 2026 term, while the other three ward pairs had two. Which ward pairs get a second Regional voice after 2026 is up to the new council.
Why the regional councillor race matters for your vote
Your regional councillor vote is the only way you directly choose who speaks for your ward pair on Regional services. Garbage pickup, water, paramedics, housing and policing are all decided or funded at the Region, so the regional councillor you elect carries your ward’s views to that table as well as to City Hall.
The city councillor race still counts at the Region in a less direct way. Three of the five winners will sit there too, but voters can’t know in advance which three.
A few practical points follow from this:
- Read both races. The two seats share a ward pair but have different reach.
- Check your ward pair before you vote. Our Brampton ward map guide shows how to find yours.
- See who is running. Our list of Brampton councillor candidates for 2026 has every certified name, by ward pair, in the City’s order.
What else is on a Brampton ballot?
Besides mayor and the two councillor races, Brampton voters elect school board trustees. Which trustee race you see depends on the school board you support on the Voters’ List, according to the City’s candidate package.
| Office | Area |
|---|---|
| Mayor | City-wide |
| Regional councillor | Your ward pair |
| City councillor | Your ward pair |
| Peel District School Board trustee | Your ward pair |
| Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board trustee | Wards 1, 3 and 4; Wards 2, 5 and 6; or Wards 7, 8, 9 and 10 |
| Conseil scolaire Viamonde trustee | Peel Region wide |
| Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir trustee | Brampton, Caledon, Guelph and parts of Dufferin and Wellington |
You vote for one trustee, not one from every board. Our Brampton school board trustee candidates list has the names.
How many people voted last time?
Turnout in Brampton’s 2022 election was 24.56%: 87,115 of 354,884 eligible voters cast a ballot, including at advance polls, according to the City’s official results release. With two councillor races per ward pair and the Regional seats decided partly by those results, a small number of votes can shape who represents a neighbourhood for four years.
What happens after October 26?
Polls close at 8 p.m. on October 26, and the new council’s term starts on November 15, 2026. The three appointments to Peel Regional Council follow after the election. In 2022 they were made at a special council meeting in mid-November, the day before Regional Council’s first meeting.
