What Brampton’s mayor does

The mayor leads City Council and votes on council decisions. Since July 1, 2023, Brampton’s mayor has also held extra powers under Part VI.1 of Ontario’s Municipal Act, often called “strong mayor” powers.

According to the City, those powers let the mayor:

  • propose the City’s annual budget, which council can amend subject to a mayoral veto and override process
  • appoint the chief administrative officer and hire senior City staff
  • create council committees and choose their chairs
  • veto certain by-laws tied to provincial priorities

That makes the mayor’s race especially important for how the City sets property taxes and spends its budget. Our explainer on Brampton strong mayor powers covers the budget, hiring and veto rules in detail.
