Where is Brampton Civic Hospital?

Brampton Civic Hospital sits on the northeast corner of Bovaird Drive and Bramalea Road in northeast Brampton, at 2100 Bovaird Drive East. William Osler Health System (Osler) runs it, along with Etobicoke General Hospital and the Peel Memorial centre in downtown Brampton.

The hospital has four entrances on Level 1: the Main Entrance, Entrance A, Entrance B and a separate Emergency Department entrance. Osler’s site maps show a cafeteria, Tim Hortons, a convenience store, a Rexall pharmacy, a gift and flower shop and a blood collection clinic on Level 1, and a multi-faith worship room on Level 2.

Driving directions

Osler gives these directions from the highways: from Highway 401, 407 or 403 eastbound, take Highway 410 north, turn right (east) on Bovaird Drive East, and drive about 3 km to Bramalea Road.

By Brampton Transit

Osler lists five Brampton Transit routes serving the hospital:

How much is parking at Brampton Civic Hospital?

Parking at Brampton Civic Hospital costs $3.85 for every 30 minutes, up to a daily maximum of $18.50, according to Osler. You take a ticket on the way in, pay at a machine inside the entrance before you go back to your car, then insert the paid ticket at the exit gate.

Flex passes can be shared between people and vehicles and allow unlimited in-and-out parking during each 24-hour period, Osler says. They are sold at the parking office at the east entrance of the parking garage, which also sells monthly passes. Daily passes are sold at the payment machines at the Main Entrance, Entrances A and B, the Emergency Department entrance, and the P1 and P3 garage lobbies.

Worked example: which parking option saves money?

The numbers below use Osler’s posted rates.

  • A 1-hour appointment: 2 half-hours at $3.85 is $7.70.
  • A 2-hour visit: 4 half-hours is $15.40.
  • 3 hours or longer in one day: 6 half-hours would be $23.10, so the $18.50 daily maximum applies.
  • Visiting a family member for 5 long days: 5 days at the $18.50 maximum is $92.50. A 5-day flex pass is $46.25, half the price.
  • Short daily visits for 10 days (2 hours each): 10 days at $15.40 is $154. A 10-day flex pass is $92.50.

If you expect to visit on several days, a flex pass usually pays for itself by the third day of full-day parking. Because a pass is valid for a year and can be shared, family members taking turns can use the same one.

What are the visiting hours at Brampton Civic Hospital?

Visiting hours at Brampton Civic Hospital are 24 hours a day, seven days a week on most units, according to Osler’s visiting hours page. Some units have set hours, and the number of visitors depends on the type of care.

What is an essential care partner?

An essential care partner is usually a family member or friend who helps with bedside care, often for a patient at risk of falling or who needs help with three or more daily activities. Osler says the clinical team decides whether one is needed and the clinical manager approves them.

Emergency at Brampton Civic or urgent care at Peel Memorial?

Go to the emergency department at Brampton Civic Hospital, or call 911, for anything serious or life-threatening. Osler lists chest or abdominal pain, shortness of breath, pregnancy emergencies, internal bleeding, numbness or weakness in the arms or hands, major trauma, mental health crises, and seizure or stroke symptoms as emergency-only.

For problems that need same-day care but are not life-threatening, Osler points to the Urgent Care Centre at Peel Memorial, 20 Lynch Street in downtown Brampton. It is open 24 hours a day, every day, needs no referral, and is covered by a valid Ontario health card.

Checking wait times

Osler posts real-time wait times for its emergency departments and urgent care centre on its wait times page. Osler says waits depend on how busy the hospital is when you arrive, and it asks patients not to leave before a doctor sees them. Its site describes Brampton Civic’s emergency department as one of the busiest in Canada.

What to bring to the emergency department

Osler recommends bringing:

  • Your Ontario health card and any extended or private insurance details
  • All current medications, prescription and non-prescription, plus a supply in case you are admitted
  • A list of allergies and medical conditions
  • A list of questions for the care team
  • Water, an extra layer of clothing and something quiet to do while you wait

Leave valuables at home. Osler says patients are responsible for their belongings.

Other options when it is not an emergency

Osler’s list of other care options includes:

  • Health811: call 811 (TTY 1-866-797-0007) for advice from a registered nurse.
  • Pharmacists: can prescribe for some minor ailments, such as urinary tract infections, mild tension headaches, acid reflux (GERD) and dry eye.
  • Family doctor, nurse practitioner or walk-in clinic: for colds, flu, minor sprains and ongoing care. Ontario’s Health Care Connect helps people without a family doctor find one.
  • Regional Virtual Urgent Care Clinic: virtual visits with a nurse practitioner, seven days a week.
