Ontario Electricity Rates Nov. 1, 2026: What Brampton Pays

Ontario electricity rates change on November 1, 2026, and Brampton homes on the regulated price plan will pay lower per-kilowatt-hour prices this winter than they did over the summer. The Ontario Energy Board (OEB) set the new prices on October 16, and they take effect on your Alectra Utilities bill with the switch to winter hours.

Below: the new time-of-use, ultra-low overnight and tiered prices, the hours that change, what the smaller Ontario Electricity Rebate means for your bill, and how to pick the plan that suits your household.

At a glance

  • Start date: Sunday, November 1, 2026 (winter prices run to April 30, 2027)

Ontario electricity rates for November 1, 2026

The OEB’s new Ontario electricity rates for November 1, 2026 apply to every home, small business and farm that buys power from its local utility on the Regulated Price Plan. In Brampton that utility is Alectra. The OEB sets these prices once a year on November 1, and the winter hours start the same day.

Time-of-use prices and winter hours

Alectra says most of its residential and small business customers have a smart meter and pay time-of-use prices. Here are the winter prices and hours from the OEB’s November 1 announcement:

TOU periodWinter hours (Nov. 1 to Apr. 30)Price
Off-peakWeekdays 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., plus all day on weekends and holidays9.1¢/kWh
Mid-peakWeekdays 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.14.6¢/kWh
On-peakWeekdays 7 to 11 a.m. and 5 to 7 p.m.18.9¢/kWh

The biggest change is the hours. In summer, on-peak ran in the middle of the weekday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. In winter the expensive blocks move to the morning and early evening, when people heat their homes, cook and do laundry. Midday becomes mid-peak.

How do winter prices compare with this summer?

Brampton’s winter TOU prices are lower than the summer prices Alectra charged from May 1 to October 31, 2026.

TOU periodSummer 2026 (Alectra)Winter 2026-27 (OEB)Change
Off-peak9.8¢9.1¢0.7¢ less
Mid-peak15.7¢14.6¢1.1¢ less
On-peak20.3¢18.9¢1.4¢ less

The OEB says prices under the Regulated Price Plan are falling year over year. That is the electricity line only. Your total bill also includes delivery and regulatory charges, HST and the rebate, so the drop on your bill will not match these numbers exactly.

Ultra-low overnight prices in Brampton

The ultra-low overnight (ULO) plan has the lowest overnight price and the highest weekday evening price of the three regulated plans. Its hours stay the same all year, so November 1 changes only the prices.

ULO periodHours (all year)Price
Ultra-low overnightEvery day 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.3.7¢/kWh
Weekend off-peakWeekends and holidays 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.9.1¢/kWh
Mid-peakWeekdays 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 9 to 11 p.m.14.6¢/kWh
On-peakWeekdays 4 to 9 p.m.37.7¢/kWh

ULO tends to suit households that do most of their power use late at night, such as charging an electric vehicle, running a dishwasher on a timer, or overnight shift workers. The 4 to 9 p.m. weekday price is about double the TOU on-peak price, so it costs more if your family cooks, runs the dryer and heats water in the evening.

Worked example: charging an EV overnight

These figures use the electricity price only, before delivery charges, HST and the rebate.

  • 40 kWh on ULO overnight: 40 × 3.7¢ = $1.48
  • 40 kWh on TOU off-peak: 40 × 9.1¢ = $3.64
  • 40 kWh on ULO weekday on-peak: 40 × 37.7¢ = $15.08

The same charge costs ten times more if it happens at 6 p.m. on a weekday instead of 1 a.m.

Tiered electricity prices and the winter threshold

Tiered pricing charges one price up to a monthly limit and a higher price above it, no matter what time you use power. Each November the limit for homes goes up, so you get more electricity at the lower price during the heating season.

TierResidential, winterNon-residentialPrice
Tier 1First 1,000 kWh a monthFirst 750 kWh a month11.2¢/kWh
Tier 2Above 1,000 kWh a monthAbove 750 kWh a month13.2¢/kWh

For homes, the winter limit is 1,000 kWh, up from 600 kWh in summer. The OEB says that gives you an extra 400 kWh a month at the Tier 1 price. Non-residential customers keep the same 750 kWh threshold all year.

Tiered pricing can work for households that can’t easily move their power use out of the TOU peak hours, for example people who work from home and run space heaters or equipment through the day.

What the 15.7% Ontario Electricity Rebate means for you

The Ontario Electricity Rebate (OER) is a provincial credit that appears on the bills of homes, small businesses and farms. On November 1, 2026 it changes to 15.7%.

The OEB links the change to falling electricity prices: because the regulated price is lower, the province can trim the rebate. The OEB says the overall rate of increase for customer bills will stay in line with previous years. For a typical home using 700 kWh a month, the OEB says the rebate takes about $23.00 a month off the bill.

What that means in practice:

  • You don’t need to apply. The rebate shows up as a credit line on your Alectra bill.
  • Your actual bill depends on how much power you use and on Alectra’s delivery charges, which the OEB notes vary by utility.
  • If you buy power from an energy retailer under contract, the regulated prices on this page don’t apply to your electricity line (see below).

Which price plan should Brampton households choose?

Residential and small business customers can switch between time-of-use, ultra-low overnight and tiered pricing. The right choice depends on when your household uses power, not just how much.

If your household…Plan to look at
Uses most power evenings and weekends, with a normal daytime routineTime-of-use (the default)
Charges an EV, runs appliances on timers, or is active overnightUltra-low overnight
Is home all weekday and can’t shift use out of peak hoursTiered

How to compare and switch

  1. Find your usage. Your Alectra bill or online account shows how many kWh you used last month.
  2. Run the numbers. The OEB’s bill calculator at oeb.ca/choice lets you test your usage against each plan.
  3. Ask Alectra to switch. Contact Alectra Utilities through its website or the number on your bill. Check with Alectra how long a switch takes and whether there are limits on how often you can change.

Energy retailer contracts: do the new prices apply?

No. If you signed a contract with an energy retailer, you pay the price in that contract, and the OEB does not regulate it. The OEB says fewer than 1 in 10 Ontario customers buy from a retailer.

Retail contract customers also pay the Global Adjustment as a separate line on the bill, on top of the contract price. Regulated TOU, ULO and tiered prices already include an estimate of the Global Adjustment. If someone comes to your door offering a fixed-price contract, compare it with the regulated prices above before you sign.

Winter disconnection ban and help paying your hydro bill

Electricity utilities in Ontario cannot disconnect a home for non-payment from November 15, 2026 to April 30, 2027, under the OEB’s winter disconnection ban. The bill still comes due, so unpaid amounts carry forward.

Five ways to cut your winter hydro bill on time-of-use

The cheapest TOU hours in winter are weekdays after 7 p.m., before 7 a.m. and all weekend. These steps use only those official hours:

  1. Run the dishwasher after 7 p.m. It moves from on-peak (18.9¢) to off-peak (9.1¢), less than half the price.
  2. Do laundry on weekends. Saturday and Sunday are off-peak all day.
  3. Skip the 5 to 7 p.m. block for big loads. It’s on-peak on weekdays in winter.
  4. Use timers. A delay-start setting on a dishwasher or dryer takes the timing off your mind.
  5. Holidays count as weekends. Statutory holidays are off-peak all day under TOU. Alectra publishes its holiday schedule for TOU prices on its website.

What happens next

The winter prices run until April 30, 2027. The OEB sets prices once a year on November 1, and summer hours return on May 1, 2027, when the on-peak block moves back to the middle of the weekday.
