When are the Brampton Christmas lights turned on?

The City of Brampton’s Winter Lights Festival runs on Saturday, November 28, 2026, from 4 to 8 p.m. in downtown Brampton, according to the City’s event page. The festival includes the official tree lighting. The City hasn’t posted the 2026 tree lighting time yet. In 2025 the ceremony took place at 6:45 p.m. in Ken Whillans Square, beside City Hall, the City said in a 2025 winter events story.

That 2025 story described a 60-foot spruce lit with more than 10,000 lights. The City’s 2026 page links to a “Tree Lighting & Miracle on Main Street” event map, which points to both returning this year.

November 28 is the Saturday after the Santa Claus Parade, so families can plan two downtown-area outings a week apart.

The City says details are still coming, so the list could change before November 28. Expect lines for Santa photos on a free event night. If photos are your priority, head inside City Hall early.

Skating under the lights at Gage Park

Skating is part of the Brampton Christmas lights night this year. Gage Park’s skating trail sits downtown at Main Street South and Wellington Street West, and the City lists it as open during the Winter Lights Festival. Skating at the City’s outdoor rinks and trails is free.

Open-air rinks depend on cold weather, so a mild week can delay the season. Bring your own skates and a helmet. Our guide to all 16 Brampton outdoor skating rinks covers the rules, the hours from last season and how to check whether a rink is open today.

Where to park for Winter Lights

Parking is the first thing to plan for the Brampton Christmas lights night. Free parking is available on a first come, first served basis at these downtown Brampton lots during the festival, the City says:

  • City Hall Parking Garage, 2 Wellington St. W.
  • West Tower Parking Garage, 41 George St.
  • John Street Parking Garage, 16 John St.
  • Market Square Parking Garage, 1 Theatre Ln.
  • Nelson Square Parking Garage and George Street North Surface Parking Lot, 2 Diplock Ln.

Because spots go first come, first served, arriving close to 4 p.m. gives you the best chance. Leave street parking spots near the closures alone. Our guide to Brampton’s parking rules covers the time limits and fines on City streets.

Brampton road closures on November 28

Two downtown roads close for the Brampton Christmas lights festival, according to the City’s event page:

RoadSectionClosed
Main Street SouthQueen Street to Wellington StreetSaturday, November 28, 1 to 11 p.m.
Wellington Street WestMain Street to George Street7 a.m. Saturday, November 28, to 12 p.m. Sunday, November 29

To keep local traffic moving, the City converts John Street and Beatty Avenue from one-way to two-way streets during the closures. If you live or work on Wellington Street West, note that the closure starts at 7 a.m. and lasts until Sunday at noon.

Getting there without a car

Downtown Brampton is one of the easiest parts of the city to reach by transit. Brampton Transit’s Downtown Terminal is at 8 Nelson Street, and Brampton Innovation District GO station, on the Kitchener line, is at 27 Church Street West.

Bus routes that use Main Street or Wellington Street may detour while the roads are closed. Check Brampton Transit’s service alerts on the day. Our Brampton Transit detours guide explains where to find them, and our GO train stations guide covers fares and the Kitchener line.

Miracle on Main Street: bring a toy

Miracle on Main Street is the toy drive held alongside the tree lighting. In 2025 the City asked visitors to bring a new, unwrapped toy for local families, in support of the Tiger Jeet Singh Foundation. The City hasn’t posted 2026 donation details yet, so check its festival page before you shop.

Are there Christmas light displays at homes in Brampton?

Brampton Christmas lights aren’t only downtown, since many residents decorate their own homes. The City doesn’t publish a list of home displays, and Brampton Brief doesn’t publish private addresses. The Winter Lights Festival and the downtown tree are the City’s own displays.

If you drive around to look at lights, park legally, don’t block driveways, and keep in mind that you’re on residential streets in the evening.

Holiday lights safety tips from Brampton Fire

Decorating your own home? Brampton Fire and Emergency Services shares these holiday tips on its holiday safety page:

  • Lights, cords and decorations are rated for indoor or outdoor use. Never use outdoor lights inside.
  • Check cords for damage before use: brittle, cracked, frayed, nicked or kinked cords should go.
  • Keep portable heaters 1 metre (3 feet) from anything that can burn, including blankets, curtains and paper.
  • Buy a freshly cut live tree. The needles shouldn’t fall off when you touch them.
  • Have working smoke alarms on every floor and outside sleeping areas, and replace any alarm 10 years or older.
  • Have a working carbon monoxide alarm beside all sleeping areas.

What this means for you

For the City’s Brampton Christmas lights event, mark Saturday, November 28, from 4 to 8 p.m., and plan to arrive early for free parking and a shorter Santa line. If you drive through downtown that weekend, avoid Wellington Street West from Saturday morning to Sunday noon. Check the City’s Winter Lights Festival page the week before: the City says details are coming, and the tree lighting time and toy drive rules should appear there.

Questions about the event go to the City’s festivals and events team at events@brampton.ca or 905-874-2000.
