How to apply for a City of Brampton job

To apply for a City of Brampton job, open the careers site, pick a posting and create a candidate profile with your name, email and a password. The City’s employment FAQ says all applications must be completed online.

  1. Find a posting at careers.brampton.ca and click the job title.
  2. Enter your email. The system checks whether you already have a profile.
  3. Build your profile. You can upload a résumé from your computer, Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive, and the system may fill in some fields from it. The City suggests uploading the résumé first for that reason.
  4. Answer the screening questions, if the posting has them. They cover your skills, education and experience.
  5. Submit. You should get a confirmation email. The City says to check your junk folder if it doesn’t arrive.

The City’s application process page recommends tailoring your cover letter and résumé to the qualifications in each posting. You can apply for more than one job at a time.

What happens after you apply

The City of Brampton hiring process has five stages, according to its application process page. Not every job uses all of them.

StageWhat happens
1. Apply onlineProfile, résumé, cover letter and any screening questions
2. Application reviewStaff compare applicants with the posting. Only those selected are contacted
3. Assessment and interviewTests, presentations or written assignments, then a panel interview
4. Pre-employment checksCriminal record search, education check, professional references
5. OfferA call to discuss the offer, then a written offer

Interviews are usually structured panel interviews with up to four people, including the hiring manager and someone from Human Resources. The City says they can last 30 to 90 minutes and that most questions are behavioural: you describe how you handled a real situation in the past.

You can follow your applications on your candidate dashboard after you log in. If you spot a mistake after submitting, you can’t apply again for the same job, but you can update your profile.

Part-time, seasonal and student jobs

City of Brampton part-time, seasonal, summer student and temporary jobs have their own listing page. The City says it accepts résumés for these year-round and fills positions based on its operational needs.

Many of these jobs are in recreation. The City’s recreation jobs page lists roles such as:

  • camp leaders and camp specialists
  • lifeguards, swim instructors and aquatic attendants
  • front desk and customer service staff
  • fitness instructors and personal trainers
  • skating, tennis, golf and other sport instructors
  • parks, landscaping and forestry workers

The City lists paid training, flexible schedules and discounted memberships among the perks. If you or your kids already use City programs, our guide to Brampton recreation registration explains how sign-ups work.

School crossing guards work 3 to 3.5 hours a day, Monday to Friday, according to the City’s crossing guard page. Applicants must agree to a medical evaluation and a vulnerable sector criminal record check. The City keeps external applications on file for six months.

After the application, the City’s Transit Driver recruitment steps include:

Other things to know before you apply

Some jobs are filled internally first. The City’s FAQ says unionized jobs follow an internal process under the collective agreement, and are advertised outside only if that doesn’t fill them.

International education. If you trained outside Canada, the City accepts education equivalency assessments from providers such as WES and the University of Toronto.

Relatives of some staff can’t apply. The City’s hiring policy bars relatives of senior leaders, Human Resources staff, members of Council, and hiring managers in the same department, with limited exceptions and an exception for summer students.

Accommodations. You can ask for an accommodation at any stage. Tell Human Resources before that stage, at 905.874.2150 or talentacquisition@brampton.ca.

The City also hires firefighters and leaders through separate pages, linked from its employment home page.
