How to get a Brampton Library card

You can get a Brampton Library card in two ways: apply online through the library’s form, or walk into any branch with your ID. Brampton Library says membership is free to every Ontario resident, so you do not need to live in Brampton.

Graphic showing that a Brampton Library card is free for Ontario residents, the library has 9 branches, and cardholders can borrow 50 print items.
  1. Apply online using the Brampton Library application form, or go to a branch.
  2. Show your ID. If you apply online, the library limits what you can borrow, including Libby e-books, until you visit a branch and show ID that confirms your current address.
  3. Get your PIN. The library sets your PIN to the last four digits of your phone number. You need it to log in, renew items and place holds online.

What ID do you need for a Brampton Library card?

Brampton Library accepts one piece of photo ID that shows your name and current address, such as an Ontario driver’s licence or an Ontario Photo Card. If your photo ID has no address (a passport or student card, for example), bring a second document with your name and address, like a bill, lease or piece of mail. The library’s acceptable ID list has the details.

Teens 13 to 15Adult options, or a parent’s card or ID, a student card or a report card

Photo ID has to be the original document. The library says proof of address can be shown on your phone.

Branches close on some holidays, including Thanksgiving weekend in Brampton (October 11 and 12, 2026). The library posts closures on its homepage, so check there before a holiday visit. Every branch has an outdoor 24-hour drop box for returns.

After-Hours Study Hall

Brampton Library opens a quiet After-Hours Study Hall on Saturdays and Sundays from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at selected branches, including Four Corners, Gore Meadows and Springdale. You need a valid library card, you must be over 14, and you have to register in person, online or by phone. Seats go first come, first served. There is no group study and no access to books or computers during these hours.

Borrowing, holds and renewals

A Brampton Library card lets you borrow up to 50 print items at once. You can renew most items online, in person or by phone, unless someone else has a hold on them or they are 7-day loans.

  • Holds: search the catalogue, click “Place Request”, and choose a pickup branch. The library emails or calls when the item is ready.
  • Pickup window: held items wait for 7 days, then expire.
  • Hold status: Active means you are on the waiting list, Pending means staff are pulling it, In transit means it is on the way, and Held means it is ready.
  • Going away? You can suspend your holds so you keep your place in line.

Does Brampton Library charge late fines?

No. The Brampton Library board removed overdue fines permanently in December 2021. You still pay if an item comes back damaged or never comes back: the library charges the cost of the item plus a processing fee. You can pay at any branch by cash, credit or debit. The library says it cannot take payments online or by phone, and you have to clear any balance before you borrow again.

Renewing your membership every year

Every Brampton Library membership has to be renewed once a year. If you have email notices turned on, the library emails you 30 days before your card expires with a link to renew online.

  • You confirm your name, address and birthdate, and give an email and phone number.
  • If anything has changed, you finish the renewal in person with ID.
  • Parents and guardians can renew cards for children under 16 online.
  • Without email notices, your account gets a temporary block at renewal time until you renew at a branch.
  • Lost or overdue items have to be sorted out first.

What this means for you

If you have never had a card, the fastest route is to walk into the nearest branch with your driver’s licence or Ontario Photo Card, since an online sign-up still needs an in-person ID check before you can borrow physical items. If you already have a card, add your email to your account so the yearly renewal arrives in your inbox and you are not blocked at the desk. One extra: the library says cardholders get 10% off Rose Theatre tickets with the promo code BOOKS.
