Brampton fireworks rules: can you set them off for Diwali?

No. Brampton’s fireworks ban covers Diwali, Canada Day, New Year’s Eve and every other day of the year. The City says the by-law bans the “use, sale, offer, display, purchase, distribution, possession and discharge” of any fireworks or explosives within city limits.

That includes:

  • Consumer fireworks: roman candles, fountains, ground spinners
  • Display fireworks: rockets, bombshells, maroons
  • Prohibited fireworks: flying lanterns, cherry bombs, M-80s, flash bombs

Sparklers are permitted under the by-law. The City’s answer for families who want fireworks is to watch the City-run shows: it says it holds events with pyrotechnics for Canada Day, Diwali and New Year’s Eve.

How much is the fine for fireworks in Brampton?

The fine for setting off or having fireworks in Brampton is $500, and selling them costs $1,000. The City can also send someone to court instead, where fines run from $500 to $100,000.

What this means for you

Brampton fireworks rules apply on your own driveway too. If you celebrate Diwali at home, keep it to diyas, lights and sparklers, and do not buy fireworks to bring into Brampton: possession alone carries a $500 fine. If you want a fireworks show, plan on the Mela on November 8, use the free shuttle, and check the City’s social media that evening in case wind cancels the show.
